How does in person and online counselling therapy work?

Online counselling is similar to in person counselling in that you work together with your counselling psychotherapist to manage and overcome issues you would like to resolve, using online communication, rather than in a therapy room.

Ann works as an experience Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, Integrative (Mind-Body focused therapy) and Mindfulness based Counsellor. She is qualified and accredited to provide Online Therapy.  Therapy usually includes follow up resources to support you between counselling sessions. This between sessions therapeutic learning aims to deepen the therapeutic experience and support positive change. I describe it as supporting you to become your own therapist!

Why choose online counselling?

  • Online therapy is not restricted by geographical location
  • You have access to an internationally accredited and experienced online Cognitive Behavioural & Mindfulness Based, Integrative Psychotherapist with an in-depth understanding of counselling and Mind-Body health, wellness and healing.
  • Time flexibility, appointment can be booked outside of office hours at a time that works for you. It also saves valuable travel time to and from a therapist venue.
  • Confidential in your space & at your time - I find that individuals are often more comfortable expressing themselves authentically in their own space and environment.
  • Convenient being able to book your support from a comfortable location that works for you.

You can choose the online therapy that you feel would best suit your communication style.

  1. Video face to face counselling - via Zoom
  2. Telephone counselling - If your are more comfortable talking to someone but not face to face quite yet, telephone counselling can be preferred by some.

Counselling and psychotherapy is provided by Ann Bracken (MA, Grad Dip, PG Dip). Ann is fully accredited to The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), The Irish Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (IAHIP) & British Infertility Counselling Association and is bound by their ethical guidelines. There is a commitment to confidentiality and to providing a non-judgemental and supportive space for you to explore and resolve issues. All appointments are booked online, in advance with a  commitment for a therapist and client to attend.

Online therapy has been proven to be effective and this is reflected in the research. The most recent research of 27,500 patients in the UK's NHS health system concluded that Online Talk Therapy Works as Well as an In-Person Session (August 2023).Statistics are interesting, however, it really is about how you feel with the therapist and therapeutic approach - importantly, will it be of benefit to you - if you attend this particular therapist, working therapeutically with this particular model/models of therapy? In other words, what will best support the issues you are bringing?

Also, it is important to note that Online Therapy is not suited to all individuals, for example, if you are under the care of a psychiatrist and being treated for problems such as OCD, severe depression, suicidal ideation or mood or eating disorders, it is usually better to work therapeutically as part of a multi-disciplinary team in person.

I have worked for seven years in an online setting and have supported many individuals with issues including or relating to; stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, fertility related issues, overcoming low mood (mild to moderate depression), understanding and managing ADHD, problematic relationships with food or alcohol, communication issues, relationship or attachment related issues or to support individuals who want coaching to experience more fulfilment in their work, health or relationships. I have also worked with many clients healing from childhood trauma (including emotional neglect and or psychological, physical or sexual abuse) and integrate trauma informed approaches in the therapeutic work we do together to support you in the healing process.

96% of the clients given online therapy and 91% of the recipients of conventional treatment rated the contact with their therapists as "personal". In the case of online therapy, the patients tended to use the therapy contacts and subsequent homework very intensively to progress personally. "In the medium term, online psychotherapy even yields better results. Prof. Maercker. University of Zurich. Source: Psychotherapy iva internet as good as if not better than face-to-face consultations". ScienceDaily, 30 July 2013.

Research has show that online counselling provides effective therapeutic support (Journal of Mental Health Counselling, 2007) when combined with CBT. Ann Bracken, Cognitive Behavioural Therapist & Mindlessness based counsellor provides therapy using CBT/Mindfulness & Mind-Body approaches with follow up worksheet resources.
